Artist Statement:

For as long as I can remember, art, particularly drawing, has been a part of my life. As a young boy I was fascinated by airplanes and spent endless hours drawing them. My father served in the Army Air Corps and I followed his lead by becoming a Naval Aviator after college. This close association with military aviation supported my interest in drawing aircraft as realistically as possible. But as an adult I became interested in painting and discovered the spontaneity and freshness of watercolors.

Watercolor is a wonderfully flexible and expressive medium and I am drawn to express the shapes and colors of the landscape, contrasting forms of cityscapes and the endless fascination of sea and shore. I am continually striving to improve my skills with the medium and to establish a distinctive, emotional approach to painting these scenes.

My current emphasis is to move beyond mere representation in my work and to capture in color and form the feelings that a city street, stately home, a rusty old truck or desert vista evoke in me. My work is still marked by the realism of my early drawings but I now seek to develop a more freely expressive style. And I still draw or paint the occasional airplane!

My educational background, BA English, University of Colorado and MA Higher Education Administration, University of Northern Colorado, does not include any formal training in art. I am largely self-taught but have attended painting workshops in the United States and Europe studying with Tony Couch, Frank Webb, Dale Laitinen and others. Locally, I am a signature member of the Idaho Watercolor Society (IWS) have taken workshops with Dwight Williams and Hugh Mossman. I am also an exhibiting member of the Treasure Valley Artists Association (TVAA) and the Boise Open Studios Cooperative (BOSCO).
